Breed Profile: Pumi

 The Pumi is a small/medium sized herding dog from Hungary.

In the 17th-18th centuries, the Pumi was likely developed by crossing Pulis, Pomeranians (and other spitz), Briards and assorted terriers.

The Pumi was originally used as a drover of cattle.  His work ethic gained him other jobs around the farm- herder, hunter, vermin killer and guard.  The Pumi herds/droves by close contact, rapid movement, barking and nipping.

Ever the active dog, the Pumi is also known to participate in obedience, dancing and agility...

Lifespan:  12-14 years

Height:  15-19 inches at the shoulder

Weight:  18-33 pounds

The coat is curly and grows constantly, similar to a Poodle coat. It must be trimmed every 2-4 months.  Coat colors: black, white, cream, red, grey

The Pumi personality is affectionate, independent, lively, bold, expressive, suspicious of strangers, intelligent, highly inclined to bark and possesses a playfulness that is maintained into adulthood. 

Goose Poop on an Oriental Rug

Well, they didn't stay small and fluffy for long.

Soon the geese were feathered enough to go outside.

During the day they grazed.  But what to do at night?  All the duck houses were full!

No problem.  That spare dog crate in the garage worked just fine.  And because the garage floor tends to be a little slippery a nice rug was set down so the geese could enter and exit their bed without any slip and falls.  

The poop?  Just had to give that rug a good shake, a little soap and water then dry it in the sun.  All garage rugs should look so good. 

Pop Culture Frenzy, Round 89

BDR Update

 Here it is August already at the Bad Dog Ranch.

In addition to our regular flock of ducks, we've added a couple of geese.   Here they are at about three days old.

Here they are a couple months later.

They don't have their grown-up feathers yet but are molting, so they're working on it.

The groundskeeper/flock manager reports that it is true that geese have a different attitude than ducks.  She handled the geese when they were very young so that they would be used to her getting into their personal space (she does this with the ducks too).  Now the geese follow her around!  

These ducks, raised in the brooder right next door to the geese, do not follow the flock manager around.

These are Rouens.  They will look like stocky Mallards when fully grown.  

Like the geese, they don't yet have their grown-up feathers.

Meanwhile, the elder ducks are taking the invasion of youngsters in stride.

Pop Culture Frenzy, Round 86

 Welcome once again to Pop Culture Frenzy.  We have been on hiatus for a long time.  It started with the COVID lockdowns.  We were, of course, deemed nonessential. Now, we're back at it.  On to our question.

What did you do during the lockdowns?

Molly?

                             I spent some time thinking about the meaning of life and stuff. 

Hostmaster:  Fluffy? 

 I wrote a book.

Hostmaster:  Bryan?

I took up day drinking.

Hostmaster:  Cyndi?

I supported the efforts to keep everyone safe.

Hostmaster:  fascinating.  Molly got deep, Byran got drunk, Fluffy got busy, Cyndi became a Karen.  I must say you guys are predictable.  I took a trip cross country, as the crow flies, so to speak.  There are advantages to being a bird, that's for sure. 

What lovely things did you see and do?

That's classified.  This round is now over for security reasons.

Happy Belated Holidays

 

I have been severely remiss about posting lately.  Lately- as in for weeks and months.  

Here is a shot of me taken by The Handsome One to thank the in-laws for their Christmas gifts. 

It may seem strange that a festive wreath is displayed next to shelves in a basement.  Actually, it's hanging from Malcom's enclosure.

 A Turkey struts across the lawn.

Now they're marching in the back nine.

There is a pair of eyes down that trail.  The racoon facing those eyes looks to be alert.
