In Mexico they do a two day extravaganza to celebrate the departed called the Day of the Dead with parties, face painting, costumes and whatnot. If I'm not mistaken they combine Aztec and Christian traditions.
Catholics celebrate All Saints on Nov. 1st and All Souls on Nov 2nd. We pretty much have it distilled down to praying for our departed brothers and sisters.
There is a comfort in honoring those who have gone before us. I like to picture them in Heaven and that they are rooting for me that I'll make the cut when it's my time.
It's admittedly an occasion that's out of my experience.
